What is the Genocide Intervention Network?

The Genocide Intervention Network (GI-NET) exists to empower individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. We are a non-profit member-based organization that advocates for civilian protection in areas where genocide and mass atrocities are occuring. In addition, we run an on-the-ground Civilian Protection Program in these areas, which directly protects civilians in harm's way.

What does GI-NET do?

GI-NET and our members raise funds and political will to prevent and end genocide. Specifically, GI-NET has:

  • Contributed more than $600,000 to our unique direct protection programs in Darfur and other mass atrocity zones, including Burma.
  • Successfully lobbied Congress for hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for peacekeepers in Darfur.
  • Wrote and passed the most robust piece of federal legislation on Sudan to date, the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act.
  • Led successful divestment campaigns in 25 states, 59 universities and 19 major U.S. cities, inspiring movements in 15 countries. As a result, 9 companies have ceased operations in Sudan or significantly changed thir behavior.
  • Created several unique tools to help our members lobby against genocide, incuding our anti-genocide hotline, 1-800-GENOCIDE, and DarfurScores.org, a scorecard that grades each member of Congress on his or her record on ending the Darfur genocide.

What does it mean to be a GI-NET member and how do I join?

By becoming a member of the Genocide Intervention Network, you are joining the first permanent anti-genocide constituency, and making a powerful statement to our political leaders that there is a large and committed group of citizens who are concerned about ending and preventing genocide.

GI-NET members are kept up to date on the latest news from the ground and around the anti-genocide movement, the most important actions they can take to end genocide, the newest activist resources, and upcoming anti-genocide events in their area. In addition, our members are able to advertise their own anti-genocide events on our website, and are eligible to receive GI-NET outreach materials for their event.

Registration is free and only takes a minute. You can sign up at http://www.genocideintervention.net/join.

How can my group become an affiliate organization of GI-NET?

GI-NET is an individual member-based organization. Currently, we do not have affiliate organizations, although we hope to have this capability in the coming year. In the meantime, we encourage you and the members of your organization to join GI-NET as individual members.

Can I volunteer in Darfur?

GI-NET does not coordinate volunteers on the ground in Darfur and does not recommend volunteering in Darfur at this time. It is dangerous work and aid workers continue to be at risk for attack. In addition, it is still difficult for aid workers to obtain the proper visas.

However, you can find lists of humanitarian organizations working in Darfur at http://ochaonline.un.org and http://www.crisisgroup.org. You can also find information from InterAction, the American Council for Voluntary International Action at http://www.interaction.org/.

What are GI-NET's political views?

GI-NET is a non-partisan non-profit organization. However, we do lobby Congress, the president, the State Department, the United Nations, and state officials.

We do rate senators and members of Congress based on how they vote on legislation that affects U.S. Policy on Darfur. The grading system for legislators is standardized and is not determined along party lines. You can learn more about the Darfur Scores program at www.DarfurScores.org.

The Genocide Intervention Network cannot and will not be endorsing a candidate for president due to our 501(c)3 status. We do hope that whomever is elected will lead the international community in ending the genocide in Darfur, and have started a campaign to press for this at www.AskTheCandidates.org.
