Communications/Media Relations Intern

The Communications/Media Relations Intern will work with the Director of Communications to promote campaigns and materials to the media and general public.

Major Responsibilities

• Copyediting documents and web pages for the organization
• Research key news and opinion leaders in the media
• Edit op-eds written by GI-Net staff and members for placement in various print media
• Draft and edit press releases for the organization

Helpful Experience:

• A working knowledge of AP style and excellent verbal and written command of English extremely helpful
• Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are essential
• Enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate degree in journalism, communications, or political science is desirable
• Interest and experience in human rights advocacy desirable, particularly related to genocide and Darfur
• Some experience working in a public relations or communications capacity is helpful
• Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable

Communications/Information Technology Intern

Communications/Information Technology Intern will work with the Communications Director and the Information Technology Associate to develop and implement innovative online campaigns to support GI-Net's initiatives. In particular, the intern will have the opportunity to put ideas into action - raising money for peacekeeping in Darfur; mobilizing a diverse constituency in supporting anti-genocide legislation; and educating the public about the need for a new response to genocide.

Major Responsibilities:

• Collaborating on "action alerts" and a member newsletter/blog with the public relations and advocacy teams
• Developing campaign websites from the ground up; including dynamic coding, site architecture, and design
• Evaluating the current GI-Net website through metrics, as well as developing methods for making it more effective, accessible, and useful
• Helping to integrate online tools and modules for fundraising, advocacy, and education, including CMS, CRM, e-mail, congressional contact and donations processing systems
• Innovating new methods for member support and engagement, especially involving social networking such as MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal, and social media such as YouTube, Flickr, and Del.icio.us
• Reaching out to online opinion-makers such as bloggers and podcasters and staying current with online discussion around anti-genocide and related issues
• Reading and staying up-to-date on other Darfur and anti-genocide organizations' projects; including blogs and newsletters, and suggesting methods for collaboration when possible

Helpful Experience:

• A keen interest in translating online participation into real-world action is ideal
• Independent, responsible, and innovative ideas
• Some experience in a position of leadership is ideal, whether through campus activism, online or in social groups
• Some experience in online organizing through social networking is highly desirable
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a variety of projects and priorities in an effective manner
• Strong writing skills and command of the English language
• A basic understanding of dynamic web tools such as PHP and mySQL
• A general comfortableness with online work and online exploration
• Ability to build a website from the ground – up helpful
• Creativity in design and accessible user interfaces
• Knowledge of standards-compliant, accessible HTML/XHTML, and CSS
• Experience using graphics and photo-editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator helpful
• Experience using a content management system very helpful
• Experience using Drupal and WordPress very desirable, but any CMS experience will be helpful
