[1]More than 500 people joined the Genocide Intervention Network's student-led division, STAND, in a march yesterday from the national mall to the White House. 18 students were arrested, including STAND's Student Director, Scott Warren.
The student march took place following a rally on the mall sponsored by Amnesty International to commemorate the 5th Global Day for Darfur and the plight of children growing up in displaced person's camps in Darfur.
STAND students carried large signs with their asks to the White House gates, [2] asking President Bush to, "SEAL the deal in Sudan" by sticking to his promises, enforcing UNAMID, applying an all-Sudan solution, and lobbying China to do more. Surviviors of the Holocaust and Rwandan genocide spoke to students in front of the White House, thanking them for their efforts and asking them to continue the fight
American University's STAND chapter president, Dana Fleitman, helped organize the event and spoke to the crowd moments before students were arrested. "What people are starting to realize is that 'Never Again' means something to this generation," Fleitman said. "We can be the generation that makes genocide a thing of the past."
