Yesterday, we shared with you compelling new satellite images that show the destruction of Abu Suruj, and other villages in West Darfur, that were attacked by the Sudanese government on February 8. You can view these images here [0].
Satellite images however, cannot capture the human element of these attacks. To really see this, you must view images from the ground in Darfur. Recent photographs of Abu Suruj, taken by the New York Times, do a phenomenal job of capturing not only the destruction of the villages, but the suffering and resilience of the people who once lived there. This heartwrenching slideshow of images documents the recent work of UNAMID peacekeepers, including their interactions with the few remaining villagers that stayed in Abu Suruj after the Sudanese government's Feb. 8 attack. Please take a moment to view these photos [1], and listen to the story of Fadila Ahmed Mahamat, a grandmother who escaped the attack at Abu Suruj.
