Your privacy is important to the Genocide Intervention Network, and we do not collect any more information about you than is necessary to help us empower you with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. Any information that we do collect or that you provide is kept in the strictest confidence and not shared with or sold to others without your explicit consent.
This privacy policy is in effect at all GI-Net websites, including www.GenocideIntervention.net [1], www.1800Genocide.com [2] and www.DarfurScores.org [3].
Please contact us [3] if you have any questions regarding our privacy policy.
What Information We Collect
Our website software does not collect personally-identifiable information. It does, however, record your computer's Internet Protocol (IP) address. This IP address could be used to identify your computer's geographic location but is not linked to any other information about you.
How you can protect your information
Because our site deals in issues that may be sensitive for the residents of some countries, if you are concerned about discovery of your location, we encourage you to use anonymization services that will mask your location. Two examples are Anonymization.net [4] and the Anonymization Toolbar [5] for the Firefox web browser. For more comprehensive anonymization, Ethan Zuckerman [6] of Global Voices Online has a comprehensive guide for those browsing and blogging from sensitive locations.
Your personal information is used for member registration and donations
We record personally-identifiable information (name, e-mail address, mailing address, city, state, postal code and country) if you choose to provide it by registering for our site. Our donation form, processed by the third-party Democracy In Action [7] service, collects similar data along with your credit card information using a secure, industry-standard protocol known as Secure Socket Layer encryption.
Our goal by asking for your geographical location in registration is to provide you with customized information about action alerts targeted to your particular elected officials and upcoming events in your area. While a city and postal code are required for registration, if you are concerned about your privacy we invite you to use Washington, DC 20005 (GI-Net's location) as your own.
You may alter your geographic information at any time by updating your user profile [7]. You may also delete your account entirely by editing your user profile and pressing "Delete" at the bottom of the screen.
We use cookies and statistical tracking to enhance our website
We also use a small piece of data called a "cookie" in order to provide you a continuous experience, such as allowing you to save your passwords on your own computer if you wish. You may set your browser to not accept cookies by altering its preferences, and although you may experience difficulties logging in as a registered user most areas of our site will function normally. As is done on most sites, our web server also collects the date and time of your visit for statistical, non-identifiable tracking.
We encrypt your user password for the website
Your password is stored on our system in an encrypted format — not even we know what it is! You can change your password at any time by editing your user profile [7].
What Information We Disclose
The Genocide Intervention Network will never sell, lease, share or otherwise disclose your personally identifiable information to any other organization without your explicit written consent, unless compelled by United States or international court or executive order. We do not sell our mailing lists to other organizations.
We keep all personal information you provide in strict confidence
If you provide personally-identifiable information to us, we keep the information strictly confidential. Democracy in Action releases your information only to approved staff members of the Genocide Intervention Network, and your credit card information is not made available — even to us.
Your geographical location may be visible to other registered users
If you are a registered user of the GI-Net website, other users will be able to see the geographical location you provide on a map, and will be able to view your user profile [7]. If you have chosen to turn on the profile contact form option, other members will be able to contact you through a web form. They will not have access to your e-mail address. Other members do not have access to your full name, mailing address or zip code.
'Tell-a-friend' systems will not store any friends' addresses
If you decide to use our "tell-a-friend [7]" system to invite others to become a part of the anti-genocide movement, you will be asked for your friends' e-mail addresses. The Genocide Intervention Network will send your friends a one-time e-mail inviting them to visit our website, along with any personal message you provide. Their e-mail address is not stored on the site and we will not contact them again.
Third-party requests for your information will always require your explicit approval...
On occasion, the news media, legislators or other GI-Net members may request the names and contact information of one or more members. We will contact you directly to ask for your permission in each and every case, and will not release this information without your explicit written consent. If you have previously given your consent to release your information and later decide you no longer wish to consent, send an e-mail to web@genocideintervention.net [8] and we will update your status.
...except when required by law
If we are required by law to disclose any information you have submitted, we will attempt to provide you with notice, unless we are prohibited, in order to give you an opportunity to legally challenge such disclosure.
