A Step Towards Accountability for Burma's Junta

Than Shwe

In a week where the Burmese government displaced hundreds of its citizens, 32 United States Senators helped take the first steps towards holding the regime of Than Shwe accountable for its brutal crimes.

The bi-partisan group of senators urged President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to support a United Nations Commission of Inquiry into crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Burma.

Working with  the US Campaign for Burma, GI-NET activists helped convince nearly one-third of the U.S. Senate, representing 21 different states, to sign on to the letter.  For the full text of the letter, please click here.

Over the past two weeks, STAND students and Carl Wilkens Fellows met with 26 senators at home and on Capitol Hill. Thank you to everyone who called, emailed, or met with their elected officials to support justice for Burmese civilians.
