Last Night's State of the Union

Last night President Obama addressed the country in his first State of the Union speech as president. Obama addressed issues of domestic instability in both the economy and government, stressing a "deficit of trust" in government, but when it came to foreign policy there was a glaring omission: genocide prevention.

Advocacy organizations including Genocide Intervention Network spent much of the past week lobbying for the President to adopt a genocide prevention framework for his administration and to outline it in his State of the Union Address. While GI-NET is disappointed the theme of genocide prevention was not addressed in the President's speech, we are still committed to working with both him and congress in the coming year to develop a comprehensive plan to prevent genocide and mass human rights atrocities.
