Activists apply pressure to Jim Steinberg offices through 1-800 GENOCIDE
As you may know, high-level officials in the Obama Administration are scheduled to meet today to review the Sudan policy. At this critical moment urgent action from the Administration is needed to ensure that Sudan's leading parties maintain their commitments to promote peace. As we approach the elections in just a few short months, there is no time for backsliding on crucial benchmarks.
This past Tuesday, more than 70 anti-genocide activists answered an important phone call from Genocide Intervention Network (GI-NET) Executive Director Sam Bell and were connected to the office of Deputy Secretary of State Jim Steinberg. (Mr. Steinberg is one of the high-level Obama Administration officials participating in today's meeting.)
By 11:00 am, Mr. Steinberg's office was overwhelmed with phone calls from Americans concerned about Sudan. By noon, Mr. Steinberg's office contacted GI-NET and requested that the calls be redirected to another number. By 2 p.m. when the call campaign ended-with close to 100 phone calls and the support of thousands around the country-Mr. Steinberg got your message.
Although Mr. Steinberg's office doesn't typically get activist phone calls, they were glad to hear from concerned citizens on Sudan. As a result of your collective actions and support, we are confident that Mr. Steinberg will be thinking about the hopes of all the activists across the country that care about peace in Sudan, as he reviews the policy later today.
