GI-NET at the Alliance for Youth Movements Summit

The Alliance for Youth Movements (AYM) held their annual international summit in London this week from March 9th to March 11th. The summit, which boasted 59 speakers from over 18 different countries, offered young, emerging activists the opportunity to discuss the best practices for ending global violence through communication technology and social media. Some of the world’s brightest activists gathered at the summit this week to learn how to best counter violence in a non-violent way during this age of rapidly developing technology.

On March 10th CBS News caught up with Janessa Goldbeck, Genocide Intervention Network (GI-NET)’s Field Director, at the AYM summit to discuss how GI-NET utilizes social networking tools to end and prevent genocide. Janessa explained that in one of GI-NET’s genocide prevention projects last year, GI-NET connected with Witness, an organization specializing in video advocacy, to train members to use film as an important advocacy tool. Members were then able to film important local figures speaking out against genocide and take their videos to Capitol Hill.
