A Peace Surge for Sudan

The message of Sudan activists all over the United States is clear: Don’t try to contain the damage from the war in Darfur—end the war. Don’t just declare that genocide is taking place—end the genocide. Don’t just try to manage the consequences of crisis after crisis in Sudan—end these crises.

“President-elect Obama has a very important opportunity to bring a new approach to how the United States, and the world, deals with Sudan,” said John Norris, the Executive Director of the Enough Project. “It is clear that the new president will need a comprehensive approach that looks at all the pieces of the puzzle at the same time, including the situation in Darfur, the role of potential International Criminal Court indictments, and looming struggles over possible southern Sudanese independence. Rigorous diplomacy will need to be backed by well-conceived and consistently escalating pressure on Khartoum and other belligerents to translate peace from rhetoric into reality.”
