The Executive Legacy Campaign: Take Action

The Executive Legacy: Take Action

As we make Sudan an legacy issue for our Executive Branch, it is important that we put constant pressure on President Bush. Click here to take GI-NET's most current action. In addition, check out the specific actions below that you can take for each policy ask.

Stick to his Promises

Targeted sanctions: Ask your representative to co-sponsor House Resolution 1011. HR 1011 urges President Bush to stick to his promises by: Urging the United Nations Security Council to implement sactions against the Government of Sudan for its detrimental actions and the continued destabilization of the region and by continuing U.S. humanitarian assistance to the refugees and internally displaced people in Chad and the Central African Republic.

Implementing SADA: President Bush signed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act (SADA) on December 31, 2007. He was given 120 days since that date to fully implement SADA -- 120 days that expire on April 29th.  Click here to send a message to President Bush asking him to stick to his promises by implementing SADA.

Enforce UNAMID

S. Res. 455: Two weeks ago, you called your Senators and asked them to join us in calling President Bush to enforce UNAMID by co-sponsoring Senate Resolution 455, which demands the full deployment of the hybrid peacekeeping force. On March 6, S. Res. 455 passed by unanimous consent, with 40 co-sponsors! Check to see if your Senator signed by clicking here.

Fund UNAMID: The 2008 budget left a shortfall of $334 million in funding for Darfur peacekeeping this year. Full funding is necessary to ensure the success of the peacekeeping mission. Call 1-800-GENOCIDE and urge your members of Congress to support an additional $334 million for peacekeeping in Darfur.

Apply an All-Sudan Solution

Full-time presence in Sudan: Call 1-800-GENOCIDE to urge President Bush to deploy a team of U.S. diplomats working for peace in Darfur and all of Sudan (the ask verbatim from the hotline). CLICK HERE to learn more.

Lobby China

President Bush Should Not Attend the Beijing Opening Ceremonies: Urge your representative to support H.R. 5668, the Communist China Olympic Accountability Act, which would prevent Pres. Bush from attending the Olympic Opening Ceremony on the grounds of China's human rights-related violations, including their support for the government of Sudan as they commit the first genocide of the 21st century.

Using the Olympics to lobby China: This year, 19 of the world's largest corporations will sponsor the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. We are asking the Olympic Corporate Sponsors to appeal to the Chinese government to use their leverage with Sudan to demand that the people of Sudan receive protection and proper medical care by the time the Games begin. Get involved by signing up to plan or participate in an Olympic Corporate Sponsor rally today.

Economic pressure on China: China provides significant military and financial support to the government of Sudan. Targeted divestment enables Universities and states to pressure the Chinese oil companies that bankroll the Darfur genocide.
